Wakefield ARL v Lokomotiv Moscow

Wednesday 11th March 2009 – 7.30 kick off

Belle Vue Stadium, Wakefield Trinity Wildcats

International rugby takes centre stage in Wakefield early next month, when Wakefield ARL take on Russian champions Lokomotiv Moscow, in a mouth watering clash at Wakefield Trinity's Belle Vue Stadium.

The Inter-Town champions will meet the Moscovites - who are in Britain to play their Carnegie Challenge Cup game against Leigh Centurions - at The Wildcats' home on Wednesday 11th March.

It will be an historic night at Belle Vue as most records show, that this will be the first visit to Wakefield by a Russian rugby league side and most certainly, it will be the first time that the amateurs from Wakefield will have locked horns with Soviet opposition.

Commenting on the fixture Wakefield ARL coach Gordy Long said, "It's a great opportunity for the amateur players in our district, it will give them a chance to play against international opposition and put them on the big stage." Gordy added, "I think that it's a good thing for the amateur fans and for the rugby community in and around Wakefield, it's certainly something different and I'm hoping that the Wildcats fans will come down and cheer their amateur counterparts on. We'll certainly give them a night to remember."

The twenty five strong Lokomotiv party will arrive in Wakefield on Monday 9th March after their exploits at Leigh, in the Carnegie Challenge Cup. They will be basing themselves at The Days Hotel, Silkwood Park and their stay will include a civic reception at The Town Hall with the Mayor and also a reception laid on by Wakefield ARL sponsors Unison at their offices.

The international friendly will be an early run out the reigning intertown champions in the preparation to retain the title in a bumber summer competiton. The success of last years 3 team series has attracted interest from York, Heavy Woolen, Hull, Bradford and Huddersfield who will join the Leeds, Castleford and Featherstone in a format that will be finalised in the coming weeks.
