BLADE BOOTS Injury to U12 player

Post by Lee Marchant on Thu Jan 22, 2009 4:12 pm

I have been asked by BARLA to submit the following and to ask
for your views and thoughts.

As previously mentioned, BARLA have not made
a U-turn on the decision to ban these types of boots but have suspended the
decision whilst further advice is sought.

---

In October 2007, one of the U-12 players recieved a serious injury during a match caused by a "blade boot". The player had a three day stay in hospital, and had to have plastic surgery to repair the damage to his knee.

There is a photograph of the injury that the boy recieved in the link below.

The club (who the lad played for) have written a letter stating that they have banned the boots from their club, but do not have authority to make the opposition do the same.

They have asked that Blade Boots are banned from the game.

---

Of course there is the issue that many parents have spent up to £100 for these type of boots for their children over the Christmas period, and this should not be forgotten.

However, there is growing concern about these type of boots, not only in Rugby League but also in Rugby Union and Football...

please look at the links below.

Bladed Boots

Post by samsung on Mon Jan 26, 2009 6:50 am

My club banned the use of "blades" in training and all games, at all age groups in 2005. This was due to an injury one of our players received which, actually, put him out of the game. We obviously couldn't ban the use of "blades" at our ground by opponents - but we did seek support from the league involved and BARLA. Nothing happened then to support us (although our ban is still in force).

They must be banned NOW. None of this shilly-shallying around.

I disagreed with the way this issue was dealt with before Christmas but wouldn't have a problem with a ban that came in from the start of next season - with plenty of time to prepare.

Along with Land mines, this is top of the UN's current agenda
Bladed boots should be banished from the pages of history.

On a more serious note, the boots should be phased out before next season

diplomatically put, of course

Time to prepare? Phased in? They should be banned immediately, how many injuries will occur whilst the preparers and phasers save up for a pair of boots? Mad

Too many fence squatters!

The Christmas issue is transient, but could have been avoided by somebody having the balls to make a decision during last year. Nobody will convince me that there is any necessity to pay £100 for a pair of boots. My lad has been selected for England U16s and has never had a pair of boots costing more than £40!

There is no doubt in my mind that blades should be banned from all sports, but why are we waiting for somebody else to take the lead? Ban them now and be leaders, not followers!

Interestingly, looking at the laws of our game and those pertaining to equipment, most noteably the size of studs, have those style of studs traditionally referred to as blades EVERY been legal in Rugby League? Question

I did ask RLS to issue those same rules to all (rather than exchange legal letters) at the December meeting of the youth leagues. Idea

We need to have clear leadership from the RFL ,I think there is enough clear evidence to outlaw these type of boots ,or are the RFL not relishing a legal challange from the boot manufactures Question

I know players who have played in blades for 7/8 years yet I have been lucky enough to never witness an injury caused by them. The same players buy new boots each season - tell them that blades aren't allowed next season and there won't be a problem, as oppose to before Christmas when because of the weather they'd only played 6 games in their new boots and were being told to buy more.
Just because I haven't seen injuries doesn't mean I don't believe they happen. I've never been run over by a car but I know it happens! The game is a hard and tough. If we can do anything to make it safer then it should be seriously considered and action should be taken.
