BARLA Tours & cost to clubs.
Can anyone explain why lads chosen for BARLA have to raise money (£2,000 for the South Pacific Tour) and the lads chosen for the Community Lions don`t

Re: BARLA Tours & cost to clubs.
I ask this in ignorance but do the Community guys get better sponsored either from businesses or the Pro Clubs? The opportunity to tour is a great honour and to travel the South Pacific must be, for many, a once in a lifetime opportunity but finding £2000, especially whilst the economic climate is so tough, is extremely difficult.
Could BARLA not organise more fundraising events to subsidise the tour eg. golf days, quiz nights, raffles or even some form of lottery etc to help?

Re: BARLA Tours & cost to clubs.
It is Community Board policy that teams representing them are fully funded , home or away, Open Age or Youth. The funds are found for this to happen .
The constituent members of the Board, if they chose to have their own rep sides , self fund as they have always done. They look to the resources at hand in their own traditional way.
This can prove particularly difficult in times of economic hardship with an expensive, long and distant tour. I have been made aware that a quarter of the named tourists already may have issues with their employment , before anyone goes near their club asking for £2000 from largely cash starved coffers .
The aim of Barla is to be applauded in expanding opportunities for its members, but realism has a place too. This trip is arguably not affordable in the current climate when spending priorities need to be balanced at club level.--------- £2000 would go a long way towards running a kids side for a whole season.
Barla need to open up the books on this one, show the true costings, their sponsorship arrangements and what the Association's own financial input is,whether it is subsidising across the squad or for individuals such as staff , coaches , officials etc. That way the bills shortly to be posted would perhaps be more edible when they land on the table of the man or woman who really counts , the poor old club treasurer !!!

Re: BARLA Tours & cost to clubs.
Hi Peter,
First the Community Board do not fund all the Community teams, the Ladies GB team partly funded there trip to Australia in the World Cup. The Masters team are going to Australia at a cost of £2500 for 17 days, The Community Board money comes from Sport England and I feel sure could be shared out more evenly. This makes a trip of a life time sound cheap at £2000. The money does not all come from the clubs, Players get grants from the local council, there District Leagues(who are proud to do it) and most players organise there own fund raising events. You are right most of the players are from the NCL and this is a great compliment to the NCL. It would be great if the NCL made a donation towards the players costs. You know as an ex-board member everybody pays the same towards the tour including me. Representive rugby makes better players which then raises the standard of the leagues there from. £2000 is a starting price I have applied for grants that should reduce the price. We have a great sponsor in UNISON That give £10,000 a year for representive rugby. We are still looking for further sponsorship. Thank you for your interest.

Re: BARLA Tours & cost to clubs.
I think a lot is done to help players raise the funds for the tours.
playing for BARLA is still much more desirable than playing for community lions. You all know this is true.
As far as I'm aware nothing comes from the rfl/rls to help Barla financially when it comes to touring and they always have to find everything themselves. The BARLA gb team has always been a dream to reach for every amateur player
Instead of promoting this assett and help fund it, the RFL decided to set up the "community lions" instead. Which is hardly working alongside BARLA is it?
I think this is one of the key issues that led towards the unsettlement between the two governing bodies.

Is it? What about those who can't play for BARLA?Big Bad Bri wrote:playing for BARLA is still much more desirable than playing for community lions.
Do We? Have you asked us all or are you presuming this is the case?Big Bad Bri wrote:You all know this is true.
Are you sure? I refer you to my first pointBig Bad Bri wrote:The BARLA gb team has always been a dream to reach for every amateur player
Isn't BARLA GB a stepping stone to GB Community Lions, alongside Students, Lionhearts (Summer Conference) and the Services? These latter three are all amateur organisations but not associated/affiliated with BARLA. I thought the pinnacle of an amateur players career was to represent their country at the highest possible level. These organisations wouldn't have a chance to do that without the Lions set-up. The best players from all 4 organisations make up the GB Lions. Amateur RL doesn't begin and end with BARLA, that's just one part of the whole amateur set up.Big Bad Bri wrote:Instead of promoting this assett and help fund it, the RFL decided to set up the "community lions" instead. Re: BARLA Tours & cost to clubs.
Hi Mick
We both well know that it is the long standing policy of the Community Board to fully underwrite the costs of the sides that represent the Community Board. The constituent members and indeed all other organisations under it self finance and always have done.I agree that £2000 is excellent for what is on offer but it remains the case that the players have to find it, that their clubs will be invoiced, and that a lot of clubmen are going to be scratching around in a very difficult climate.
Leigh East for instance have to find 10k. What are you going to do if they can't?
The Community Board activities are funded by the RFL and not Sport England. Your various Barla reps should by now have explained that to your Board.
As for NCL finances,we operate rather differently to Barla. We believe in putting our resources to work for our members. As of last weeks management meeting, we held less than 10k in our current account. You as a Barla trustee sit on more than 700k.If you are prepared to commit 10% of that to this Tour, then I will push NCL to commit 10% of their funds as well. And before you say you have other commitments,so do we.- including our own Tour to France in June.
So what about it Mick? Wouldn't it be great gestures all round ?
