The NW Counties 13-15’s League has been saddened to hear the terrible news of the tragic murder of one of our players, John Michael Marsh, at the young age of 15.

“Marshy” as he was known to his friends was a former NW Counties player who having started as a youngster at Haydock, spent several happy seasons with the Club before moving with his family to Lowton and becoming a Leigh Miners player.

The popular Prop had never lost contact with his former Haydock Coach, and friend, Chris Park and was, we are told, “always a pleasure to work with at training and really nice & pleasant lad”.

He had recently moved to the Thatto Heath area of St Helens but his heart was always with Haydock Warriors and he subsequently signed on for them for the 2009/10 season.

A former Golborne High School pupil, John had struggled to regularly get down to training but it was his intention, as soon as he’d managed to sort transport out, to return, fully committed, to once again don the Black & Gold of his beloved Haydock Warriors.

Sadly, this was not to be as John was fatally wounded following a street disturbance in Hempstead Close, Sutton Heath on Saturday at about 11.40pm.

Police, paramedics and doctors fought in vain to save his life but he died from his injuries shortly after arrival in hospital.

Shocked neighbours, team mates and school friends are still coming to terms with the incident.

A Facebook RIP page in John’s honour has been opened, and it is a reflection on his popularity to see that it has already attracted hundreds of messages.

The mother of one of John’s friends wrote:
The tributes that are coming in for this young lad are not just because he has died; they are because he was a well thought of, polite, genuine, popular young man.

John called at our home frequently for our son and was always well mannered and clearly well brought up.

Through the cruel actions of others I now have a child who at 14 has to deal with the grief of not only losing a friend but having to deal with the deplorable way in which his life was taken from him”.

The NW Counties 13-15’s League would like to express our sincerest condolences at this very sad time to the parents, family and friends of this young man who has been taken from us way before his time.

We would ask that, in honour of John, and as a mark of respect to his family that all our Clubs & Teams hold a dignified minutes silence this weekend as we remember the sad loss of one of our own.
