Having been nominated for the position of Open Age Board of Management of the British Amateur Rugby League Association, I am seeking your support in the forthcoming elections.

I’ve been involved with amateur rugby league as a player, coach and administrator for over thirty years, taking my first administrative role at the age of 19, when I became the secretary of Hanging Heaton ARLFC. A role which lasted some ten years before moving to Dewsbury Norths in the same role and I have been involved with BARLA first as coach from1995 to 2004 before stepping up to the International Manager post in 2006.

Throughout my time in the amateur game I have always been an active fundraiser and have secured a massive amount of funding for my present club Shaw Cross in grants and sponsorship, which has helped Shaw Cross to achieve its present day standards. I have maintained this within the BARLA International set up, finding countless sponsors for Internationals and my recent efforts has seen me be directly responsible for over £40,000 secured in sponsorship for the association.

I view as a natural step the progression from International Manager to a BARLA board of management member, as did my predecessors; Gordon Robb, John Kane, Joe Elliott, Harold Swift MBE and our present Senior Vice Chairman & International Chairman Jackie Reid MBE. All these made the successful transition from the playing field to the boardroom.

I feel that I can make a significant contribution as a member of the board of management, in taking BARLA forward into the 21st century. Having been a successful business man and running my own company for almost 30 years, I would bring with me my business acumen which I feel is necessary in decision making. I also feel that I could bring some new energy and emphasis to be part of a more dynamic, modern board of management as we attempt to keep pace with the game in this new era.

BARLA has been seen to be treading water for too long now, often getting dragged under by the flow of negativity running through the association. What we need is a definite new direction with which to lead the amateur game, a pathway that is steered by a new ignition of ideas and initiatives. I want to be part of a board of management which will be responsible for this and this is why I am asking for your support and to elect me to the BARLA Board of management.

Regards,

Mick Turner
