The BARLA under 23s UNISON Ukraine Tour

The fresh assembled BARLA under 23s squad are set to be the first BARLA touring side to visit the Ukraine where they will play an international game versus the national side. The squad includes a majority of touring debutants who have impressed in the open age and under 19s county championship teams.

The accustomed coaching partnership of Kevin Armitstead and Kevin Thompson who successfully triumphed in the Simone Franchini International Nines competition last June in Italy will not be able to combine for this latest task. Thompson is unable to relinquish work commitments for the tour and has drafted in under 21’s assistant coach Martin Oglanby to offer support to the head coaching role of Armitstead.

The squad are set to fly out to capital Kiev from Luton on Monday 15th June and then travel onto Kharkiv where the touring squad will be based. The international match versus the Ukrainian National side will be played on Wednesday 17th June in an evening test match and then it is planned for Thursday and Friday, for the tour party to help with a development programme set to raise the profile of the game within the Ukraine.

The final representative fixture of the tour will be played on Saturday 20th versus Lokomotiv Moscow before departing back to Kiev where a day of sight seeing in the capital will be the last item on the itinerary before touching back down in Luton on Monday 22nd June.

The touring opportunity has appeared from successful talks between Julia Bennison and Kevin Rudd of the RLEF and BARLA International Manager Mick Turner and thanks to support from tour sponsor - UNISON the public service union, 22 young men will be representing their country on foreign soils this coming June.

Roger Fagge Tour Manager

"I'm delighted to be taking this group of young players to the Ukraine, many of them who are making their international debut which is great testement to their dedication and commitment to the amateur game."

"We will be taking a step into the relative unknown as far as BARLA is concerned, but we've had plenty of help from Julia Bennison and Kevin Rudd of the RLEF which has aided us immensely while making preparations for the tour."

"It's an exciting prospect to be visiting Ukraine and adding another successful chapter to BARLA's excellent history in the game's development."

Mick Turner BARLA International Manager

"I would like to thank our sponsors - Unison, as well as all the clubs for their support. It's a great opportunity to visit different places and see how other people live. No doubt we will forge friendships and the winner will be rugby league."

"The tour is a stepping stone to bigger things for a lot of these players and coaches who will all enjoy the experience."

Ukraine Tour captain named

At yesterday's final training session ahead of their Ukraine tour, BARLA Great Britain under 23's head coach Kevin Armitstead, installed East Hull's Ashley Johanssen as tour captain. Ryhs Davies (Egremont) was announced as the vice captain.

The tour party will now assemble at The Village Hotel, Tingley on Sunday evening 14th June, for a squad bonding event. The tour party will spend the night at The Village, which is their departure point for Luton Airport the following morning at 7.30 am.

Head coach, Kev Armitstead
"Both me and Martin (Oglanby - assistant coach) are really pleased with the sessions that we've had and very excited at the prospect of meeting Ukraine. All the lads have trained and hard to say that we've only had a short time for preparation they've done really well. I'm very pleased with the squad we've assembled of which Kevin Thompson has had a great input. There's some quality backs, with some skill and pace very hard working outstanding forwards."

Mick,
My comment wasn't a criticism of your contributions to the forum and I wish your tour every success but it is quite obvious that others in your organisation are totally ignoring an opportunity to debate on here. The Forum is after all "The BARLA Forum" and I find it strange that BARLA contributions are not forthcoming.
Questions have been asked and threads trundle along without any answers from the targets of the questions. I don't count any of the nonsense from the Honourable Member from Cumbria aka Dummy Spitter as being anything like an answer.

Hello All,

I've taken the story below from the Rugby League European Federation website, It looks as though the Ukraines are all set to meet our under 23's next week .....

UKRANIANS LOOK FORWARD TO FIRST LEAGUE TOUR

Friday 12th June 2009

The Unison sponsored BARLA Under 23s are set to become the inaugural rugby league touring party to visit Ukraine.

They will face the national team and one of the strongest club sides in the region, with the majority of the young party first timers to playing the code abroad.

Ukraine RL Manager Artur Martyrosyan Senior is looking forward to their arrival.

“We are busy preparing for BARLA`s visit to make sure they have a great time on and off the field” he said.

“It should be a good opportunity for Ukraine to gain more Rugby League experience as we did last year when the GB Student Team came to Kharkiv.”

“We believe that fixtures like this will help us to keep improving our game. We are grateful to BARLA and the RLEF for giving us this opportunity."

Kevin Armitstead is set to coach the tourists and he will have Martin Oglanby as his assistant.

The squad are due to fly out to Ukranian capital Kiev from Luton on Monday 15th June and then onto Kharkiv where they will be based.

The international match against the Ukrainian national side will be played on the evening of Wednesday and it is then planned that on the Friday the BARLA side will help with a development programme to further raise the profile of the sport.

On Saturday 20 th they will face Vereya, Moscow Region before departing back to Kiev where a day of sight seeing will be the last item on their itinerary before touching back down in Luton on Monday 22nd June.

BARLA International Manager Mick Turner said, “I would like to thank our sponsors Unison, as well as all the clubs for their support.”

“It is a great opportunity to visit different places, see different cultures and, no doubt, forge lasting friendships. The tour is a stepping stone to bigger things for a lot of these players and coaches and I hope they enjoy this experience.”

DAY ONE – The Journey (Monday 16th June)

6.00 GMT
An early morning wake up call from the hotel matron ensures the lads are up bright eyed and bushy tailed ready for breakfast. All the touring squad stayed the night at the Tingley base at the Village hotel and after a few drinks retired for an early night.

7.30 GMT
All fed and watered the tour party embark on their first journey of the day by coach to Luton airport. A 3 hour journey passes quickly although the Cumbrian lads might not agree with the onboard entertainment being the 2 Yorkshire County Championship wins on DVD.

11.00 GMT
We arrive at Luton airport in good time and straight into check in, just a couple of hours to kill in the departures lounge.

13.30 GMT
All present and in the air the captain wishes the squad all the best for the tour and hope they enjoy the two and half hour flight. We’re expected to land in the capital Kiev at 6pm local time (GMT +2) where we’ll be met by our Ukraine contact who has organised travel to our base Kharkiv.

19.30 Local Time
We arrive in the capitals airport met by Arthur who is an English speaking RL development officer and also player coach of the national side. For some reason our initial plan of catching the overnight train has changed and the squad are split into 2 mini buses for what we’re told is a 5 hour journey. Before leaving the airport we change some currency and stock up on some supplies for the long trip.

22.00 Local Time
A good few hours into our journey and we make a scheduled stop for a meal, where we are served chicken soup and BBQ pork. A toilet break brings the first culture shock of the day, now the lads may be used to doing squats in the gym but the WC leads nothing to the imagination.

23.00 Local Time
Back on the road for a what we’re told another 3 hour stint until we reach our hotel. It’s been a long journey and the lads try and get some shut eye on the buses, but the despite the countries flat nature the condition of the roads mean that it’s a bumby ride.
The lads are just wanting to get their heads down but only Jonty (Physio) seems to be able to sleep on demand. The morning schedule has been cleared so the lads can catch up.

3.30 Local Time
We arrive at our hotel base for the tour, its been a long journey and the lads are weary, we check and get some much needed rest.

Following on from the Unison BARLA Great Britain Lions opening Test Match 30-18 victory over Tonga on Saturday the side have continued their training regime and after consultation Head Coach John Fieldhouse and Assistant Coach Gary Charlton have named an eighteen man squad for their next game.

That takes place against the Samoa Patriots on Wednesday 17th June, kick off 7.30pm twenty four hours following their arrival in the country. The side consists of the ten players that missed out on the opening win of the tour plus eight who played in the opener.

The squad includes nine Yorkshire players, six Lancastrians and three Cumbrians with John McMullen of Wigan St Judes once again captaining the side.

Assistant Coach Gary Charlton said,
“We have selected the team that we feel will be able to get the result against the Samoa Patriots and as against Tonga we expect a hard physical battle in the pack and that they will have exciting backs trying to exploit us.

“Our defence was magnificent on Saturday especially in the opening forty
and the lads performed superbly in front of the large crowd at the game,
something the lads are not probably used to at home
“We have picked the lads that missed out in the opening win and some others will be playing their second game. John and I have emphasized that the places for the Test Match on Saturday are up for grabs and it is up to
the players to respond on Wednesday.

“All the lads have responded during the training session and they like everyone on this tour know that they are in it together whatever the result. The last match has gone and now we are focusing on the next
challenge”

Unison BARLA Great Britain Manager Mick Turner,
“The lads are blending well and had some R & R on Sunday but it was back to business in the training from Monday. We have as you would expect a few bumps and bruises but nothing major. They are now learning about moving from one country to another and it is part of their learning curve in
rugby league and one that they won’t forget.”

Moscow Vereya Bears .. 22 (4)
BARLA Great Britain Under 23s .. 36 (26)

At FC Arsenal, Kharkiv, Ukraine

The BARLA Great Britain Under 23s opened up their Ukraine tour with a hard fought victory over Russian Championship runners-up Moscow Vereya Bears who managed to go the distance with BARLA adding 2 late tries to force a hint of a comeback.

It was BARLA who won the opening exchanges when debutant Mike Johnson (Myton Warriors) raced down touchside to finish off a Francis King (Wath Brow Hornets) break from inside his own half from the first set. Vereya rocked by the early score replied with some stern defence, several handling errors in key positions meant BARLA couldn’t get in a scoring position until the 14th minute. Following a forced error BARLA turned the possession into points after a few steadying drives Ryan Peters (Leigh East) lofted a chip into the corner where Leigh Rientoul (York Acorn) plucked the ball out of the air to finish in the corner, Peters converting the effort from the touchline.

Verya who had hinted throughout the first half that they were dangerous with ball in hand and soon got points on the board, shipping the ball out wide for Pryznyakou to beat the defending winger on the outside.

The closing 5 minutes of the half was to be BARLA’s most productive, running in 3 tries to take a 22 point lead into the break. GB captain Ashley Johannessen (East Hull) was the first to take a try beating several defenders on his way to the line. Aaron Lowe was next onto the score sheet going through a gap from a lovely ball from Peters. Right on the whistle another debutant David Cookson (Oldham St Annes) pounced on a loose ball under the posts, Peters converted 2 of the tries to take a 26-4 victory into the interval.

Again from the off BARLA scored on their opening set with full back Rhys Davies (Egremont) returning from his own 10 meters and racing the length of the field, Peters again goaled.

Just like the first half the early try seemed to spur the Russian side on and with some errors from BARLA enjoyed most of the possession for the remainder of the half. They first replied by Ilgiz Galimov who’s try was duly converted by Lysokov to lift the Russians spirits.

Only after some hard yards from out of their half from Lee Fewlass (Myton Warriors) and Dean Morgan (Barrow Island) did BARLA get a sniff of the try line for Aaron Low (Barrow Island) to go in for his second try of the afternoon.

The closing 15 minutes of the game belonged solely to Vereya as they ran in 2 converted tries from Vlasyuk and Suchkou to force a scare on BARLA’s 26 point lead.

Following the game Head Coach Kevin Armitstead said :
“Im very happy with the win, I thought it was a really good victory but we made hard work of it in the second half and our last play options were poor and we didn’t respect the ball enough. To be fair to the lads we have only trained twice together prior to coming out here and then the session yesterday but we scored some real good tries and finished off some good things and very pleased in the performance overall.

It’s been great to play in such an excellent venue and stadium and the lads adapted well to the artificial surface, and no major injuries just a few grazes and some of the lads suffered from cramp later in the game.

I was very impressed with the Moscow Vereya side, I thought they played some great football and ran some really good angles, they were a lot better than I envisaged. They kept on going end to end and never dropped off. We gave them long periods with the ball which gave us a lot of defending to do and in the end they scored a few good tries.

We have a few sessions planned before the Ukraine test match on Saturday with 5 lads coming into the squad, we’ll try and work on our efficiency and put he little things right. I’m really looking forward to the game.”

Ukraine .. 20 (Cool
BARLA Great Britain Under 23s .. 38 (24)

At FC Arsenal, Kharkiv, Ukraine

The BARLA under 23 Lions keep their unbeaten record in a historic game versus a Ukrainian national side who are only 2 years into its infancy. The ground breaking tour which has included a friendly warm up versus Mosocw Vereya where BARLA were victorious by 36-22 and a training programme led by Kevin Armitstead and Martin Oglanby culminated this Saturday in an entertaining match for over 200 Ukrainian supporters.

BARLA opened up in rapid form with Barrow Islands Aaron Lowe tearing the defence to pieces with 2 quick fire tries, one of which was converted by Leigh Easts Ryan Peters.

The Ukraine soon got back in on the action taking advantage of a fumble of a spiralling kick, Kavchenko Sergey reacting first to the handling error.

Tour captain Ashley Johannessen (East Hull) soon steadied the ship taking advantage of a back tracking Ukraine defence from a Ryan Peters earlier break, Peters converting to put his side12 points infront.

Only minutes later York Acorns Leigh Rientoul superbly finished smart play from Richard Dunham (Myton) after taking into the line and releasing lightning heels Rientoul to race out of his own half to leave the last man standing.

Again the blistering sun aided the Ukraine towards their next points as a high ball was fumbled and the pressing attack collected to give them a 2 on 1 opportunity which Liubensky Artyom finished in the corner.

Right on the stroke of half time and the last play of the half Adam Thomason (Leigh Miners) broke blindside of the scrum and took advantage of the overlap as Ryan Peters supported to go in for a self converted try to round up the first halves action.

Almost straight from the restart quick thinking from Thomason (Leigh Miners) who attacked the blindside and a quick hands from Low put fellow Barrow team mate Sam Jones clear down the touchside, who sped away under the sticks, Peters converted the easy conversion to extend a 22 point lead.

The intense heat started to take its toll on the Great Britain players as several tries went begging but soon got back on track when captain Ash Johannessen went into complete his match brace and third of the tour.

To finish off a game of doubles York Acorn winger Leigh Reintoul came in field to take in the ball and found a gap in the middle to race from half way for his brace.

The proud and determined Ukraine side never stopped battling and were rewarded towards the close of the match as Oleg Marhaj took advantage of the weary BARLA lions team with the sun taking its toll on the lions Artyom Liubensky converting both efforts to give the crowd lots to cheer about as the game came to a close and the Ukrainian RL federation complete their firs international friendly.

BARLA u23s Head Coach Kevin Armitstead praised the opposition saying
“Today was no walkover as the score suggests we were made to work hard for every point. While helping with the development programme throughout the week it was obvious how physically fit the Ukrainians were, they showed real promise with all their key skills and their performance today was outstanding. I think they made us work harder than the Wednesday game versus Moscow, they will do well in the eurobowl competition in late July versus Estonia and Latvia, and without seeing the 2 other sides the Ukraine must be favourites.”
On his own side Armitstead said
“Our boys showed some real determination today in temperatures in excess of 35+c, our build up play and kicking game was much improved from Wednesdays game and Im very pleased on how they conducted themselves. ”
